A business profile/bio

Plaza Tire Service was established in 1963 by Vernon “Pee Wee” Rhodes.  Its first location opened on William Street in Cape Girardeau as Plaza Car Wash, a hand-operated car wash.  The company gradually expanded to provide tire services in addition to washing cars. 

Plaza Tire Service’s earliest tire services were conducted on the sidewalk outside the car wash.  Local regulations ended this practice, and the company chose to exclusively provide tire and automotive services from that point on.  The car wash was renovated over one weekend, without losing a single day’s work.  Plaza Car Wash was renamed Plaza Tire Service, and its success continues to grow 51 years later.

Plaza Tire Service now consists of 57 stores located throughout Southeast Missouri, Metro St. Louis, Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and Northeast Arkansas and employs nearly 400 people.  The company’s flagship retail location continued operating at its original Cape Girardeau site until it was replaced by a newly built location on the opposite corner of the same block in May 2013.  Two other stores operate in its home market for a total of three retail locations in Cape Girardeau.  Plaza Tire Service’s Corporate Offices, Training Center, Route Sales, Quick Lube Division and Mighty Auto Parts franchise also operate in Cape Girardeau where one-fourth of the company’s employees work.

The most recent additions to the Plaza Tire Service family were made in the Cave Springs area of St. Peters, Mo. where a second location was opened in September 2013.  Earlier that year, the company grew by five stores when an existing tire retailer was purchased allowing Plaza Tire Service to enter the Jefferson City, Mo. market with two locations, Mexico, Mo. with one location and two new stores in Columbia, Mo. where it already had one store. 

Another significant development occurred at Plaza Tire Service in February 2014 when its twelve-year-old Kennett, Mo. store burned in a furnace fire.  The store temporarily relocated to a facility on the same street while rebuilding at its permanent property.  The Kennett Plaza Tire Service was able to move back to its newly build permanent store in July 2014.

Plaza Tire Service is currently listed as Tire Business magazine’s 26^th largest independently owned North American tire retailer based upon number of outlets and is a founding member of Tire Alliance Groupe (TAG).  All Plaza Tire Service stores carry reputable brands including Bridgestone, Yokohama, Firestone, Michelin, BFGoodrich, Pirelli, Dick Cepek off-road tires, Falken and environmentally-friendly Nokian Tyres along with custom wheels.  The stores also employ skilled technicians that provide brake, battery, shock, strut, oil change, state inspection, tire rotation and balance and wheel alignment services.
